For some reason, the last couple of times I have tried to respond to friend requests by sources through PM or simply PM a source in response to a promotional opportunity, I am not able. If I click on the "send message" tab, it brings me right back to MG home. If I click "contact me", I get an access denied message.

i am having this same problem
Will that be fixed in the future or is that a matter of new site policy? When I get friend requests from sources that I am not familiar with, I respond with a PM to decline. When member try to friend me, I like having a candid, PM string with them to determine whether or not I even want to be friends...
