Calories and Diet

How do you calculate your needed calories?

I have always used the following-

MASS - Body Weight x 13 + 800 Calories

CUT - Body Weight x 13 + 100 Calories

I prescribe to a  50/40/10 diet.

Now I Have a Quick Question and it might be stupid but id rather know for sure. With my weight being 170 your above formula for mass suggests i should be eating just a little over 3,000 calories, the current diet plan I am running is upwards of 6,100 calories. My question is Is my diet overkill? Like if i eat 6000 calories a day am I just wasting my money on so much food or will I see even better gains eating this much? I dont want to be paying out the ass for food just to not get better results you know?

I weigh about 165 and when on cycle I plan for and eat 5000 calories.  I gain much better that way.  I have never thought I might be wasting anything.  If I could add more I would.

Okay Right On, I just wasnt sure if weighing 170 and trying to eat what bigger guys try to aim for didnt know if it would be productive or counterproductive as in the body not using all the nutrients and stuff im putting in

My Body does not seem to agree with too much food. I eat clean. Real clean. always did. If I tried to bulk with 5000 calories of clean food id be a fat slob. Plain and simple. I am starting to cut now and I'm 1500 to 2000 Calories. My weight is 247 after cycle. I was touching 260 on cycle. I have digestive problems.  Never had a problem bulking or adding mass. I fight to keep fat off..

Its a good problem. I went from 232 to 260 last cycle and benching 415. Its time for me to face the facts of getting older though.. I need to stay lean. I'm shooting for 235.  I could eat all day bro. Love food...

If your goal is to bulk then you gradually increase calories until you start putting on fat. If you are eating 6000 calories and arent getting fat then no its not too much. A lot more than just bodyweight and activity level determines your caloric needs. There are a myriad of factors that will allow one 170 pound man to gain clean size on 6000C and another 170 pound man to get fat on 4500C. The answer is not in a math formula, its in the mirror. And even then the type of calories plays a huge role. I know there are the people out there who are obsessed with "caloric surplus you gain, deficit you lose" but you eat 6000 calories from nothing but candy and Ill eat 6000 calories from chicken breast and we'll see who looks better.

Semper Fi that formula sounds about right, i think the younger guys could get away with eating more, but your method is what i am currently using, simple formula for people to remember

I have used the +1000-1500 calories but just like Griz stated we have the find our individual sweet spot. +800 to build mass and +100 to cut has provided me with my best results.

If your not gaining excess amounts of BF then that could be ideal for you, granted on a bulk u will always see some fat gain. But the big thing is your TDE total daily expenditure. Look online and you can get a baseline number based on your activity level. For instance I work out 5 days a week, but also have an office job, so i'd be a fatass on 6,000 cals no matter what cycle i was running, but on the flip side if you do physical labor or are always moving and workout with wieghts and do cardio, then 6000 could be your number. Sempers formula works, but your TDE is key. I just read an article on how bulking doesn't mean eating everything in sight but more importantly seeing what you burn in a day and increasing that by 500-1000 calories anything more isn't necessarily a waste but will be stored as fat. The body will only use what it needs and the rest is again "saved" in the form of fat as a natural way to prepare for starvation. Similar to a bear and hibernation, or a squirrel gathering acorns for the winter. Its caveman science. So my advice find your sweet spot!
