Love deads myself...a bulged disc in my back near a nerve has prevented me from doing them. I can still do stiff legged deads though.

That sucks...so you have to do bench press and everything else with a smith?

Lucky the free weights ain't to bad and I can get a lot done with them, but yeah it sucks pretty bad. Getting some straps for my deads, hopefully these might make it more comfortable on the smith.

Just be careful on the smith because you're locked into one range of motion.

It's really hard to feel comfortable because you never feel like you've got your back straight enough, normally I like to have a good squeeze at the end of each rep but its not easy on the smith because the bar is not in the right place IMO.

I would not be doing deads on a smith, that sounds like bad news bears. I would think a lot of the weight would be displaced incorrectly and it would put too much of a strain on the low back, in a bad way. I mean how can you even lock out the hips at the top? I would say screw that and dont do em. You can always do some stiff-legged deads with dumbells to hit your hammies.
